25 Years in the Dog Poop Biz! 10 Years picking it up, and 15 years teaching others how to do it. With a wife, a 3-year old daughter, and a baby on the way… working two full-tie jobs and starting up the business on the side, When I first started the dog waste removal service in February of 1988, Danny Russell, an editor for Suburban News Papers in Columbus called me an “ideas man,†and wrote that I “would be wasted on anyplace but the land of opportunity.†In 2001, a few years after I wrote The Professional Pooper-Scooper, Scott Simon, host of NPR Weekend Edition, compared me (even if slightly tongue-in-cheek) to Thomas Edison and called me “… a visionary, a magnate,†and “a prophet -- at least he succeeded in turning a profit in the pet waste removal business.†Wow, being on his show was a thrill that I''m proud of! It was publicity like that that led to more fame, including: an article on the front page of the Los Angeles Times, a by-telephone interview with the BBC in London, and a story in a German newspaper, as well as smaller and closer-to-home newspapers and radio talk shows. Starting the service with nearly nothing, I built it up over 10 years to servicing hundreds of clients each week with several employees and a small fleet of pickup trucks. Over the years selling thousands of books, by which hundreds of people in the United States and Canada, and a few outside of this continent, started their own businesses. In accord with my advice to “provide something of value†the Scoopers & Friends Discussion Board at Pooper-Scooper.com is a free online resource where people from around the country discuss the ups and downs and ins an outs of the dog waste removal service, including the occasional query about cleaning cat litter boxes on the side. 25 years... wow... :) What a ride! Little did I know how this was going to help me live my life in a way that suits my personal values and provide a lot of enjoyment and meaning to so many people. THANK YOU, everyone! Matthew |
